Conferences

Just a reminder that Student led conferences are this Thursday (evening) and Friday (morning).  You should have received your time(s) in the mail last week.  Here are a few things to remember for conferences:

1) Conferences times must be adhered to.  The entire school is on a coordinated schedule, so please do your best to be on time.  If you cannot attend, please contact the teacher(s) involved and reschedule.  The total time of the conference is 15 minutes.  We ask that you also adhere to this time frame, as other people will be waiting.

2) The conferences are student led.  I will have to "guide" many of the students, and may have comments to add but this is mainly for the students to share their learning and experiences.   If you feel that you need additional time, or you would like to discuss other questions and/or concerns please contact me to arrange a time.

Iceberg Homework

Your child will bring home a viewing sheet this evening.  On the sheet there are 6 categories for viewing.  I ask that you please look at the picture, and discuss each category with your child.  We have had  practice with this at school, but I would like you to be involved in the process as well.  Thank you.

Star of the Week ~ Colton

Last week our star was Colton.  He loves to play outside and loves to eat grilled cheese sandwiches.  Colton talked about his pets Mia and Bella, and how he loves every kind of book.  Colton brought a chocolate cake to share with the class ~ Yum!  His Dad also came to visit (with the fire truck) and discuss fire safety with our class.  Thanks so much Colton!

Commenting on Student Blogs

Today we posted stories about the mess that was left in our classroom by the leprechaun.  Please take some time to read and comment on a few of the posts.  The students greatly appreciate the feedback.

Thank you!

The Visit...

Over the weekend our classroom was visited by a leprechaun, who made a terrible mess!  We began cleaning up, and discovered a puzzle which revealed clues to where a "treasure" was hidden for us.  We solved the puzzle, followed the clues, and discovered some "gold" in Miss Rachul's room.

Book Orders

April book orders were sent home today.  If anyone is interested in ordering, I will be sending them away on Friday, March 23rd.  Thank you!

Can we make it Float?

To finish our day, I challenged the students. I gave each student some plasticine and asked them if they could make it float. After trying many creative ways, coming very close to success, they saw what just about worked and then ... WOW, we had plasticine floating everywhere!

We put pencils through our plasticine...

We put our plasticine inside our pencil sharpeners...

We wrapped the plasticine around our pencil sharpeners...
We even wrapped the plasticine around our pencils...
The first successful attempt!
Whoop Whoop!

Watching to see what is working
for others.

Let's hope it works...
Helping everyone,
and cheering loudly when it works!

We are Magicians!

Today we also tried to prove the theory that air takes up space.  We put a dry tissue inside a cup, and submerged it into water.  If done correctly, the air inside the cup pushes the water away, and leaves the tissue dry... Here are our results!

Will it Float?

Today we made predictions, then tested our predictions, about what would float in water.  Here are a few pictures from our morning.

Making 10

Ways to Make 10

Grade 1's have been working on math facts in addition and subtraction.  One of the strategies used is making 10.  This song (although somewhat annoying) is quite useful.  We need to know all the ways to make 10, and also how to "fill in the missing addend".  Feel free to play this song or practice these strategies using other numbers as well.

Thanks!

Oreo turns 100 years old!

The Oreo cookie is 100 years old this month!  Today we celebrated with Oreos and milk for snack!  A special thanks to Owen (and his Mom) for sending Oreos for the whole class, and to Cam Elder for bringing us milk for dunking!

We then discussed commercials, and viewed two Oreo commercials.  There are links to each commercial below.  Watch them then discuss with your kids ~ they love them!
