100th Day of School

In conjunction with the 100th day of school (Tuesday, February 7th), our class will be having a bake sale. Items will be sold for 100 cents, with all proceeds going towards Abigail Roberts. Abi was a student in Coronach School and is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. I ask that each family volunteer to send a dozen items that can be sold for $1 (such as cupcakes, muffins, jello cups, big cookies). Items can be brought to school on the morning of February 7th.

If you are unable to send items, or choose not to participate, can you please let me know so that we have an idea of what items to expect that day.

Tuesday, February 7th will be our 100th day of school. To help us celebrate, I would like your cooperation with the following things. For snack that day, I would like the students to bring 100 of something. Obviously this means the snack will have to be smaller items, such as 100 cheerios, pretzels, raisins, etc. If you can count these out with your child while preparing it that would be wonderful.

We have also decided as a class to dress up on the 100th day. We are coming to school dressed as 100 year old students! They have ideas for dressing up (hair in buns, glasses on the end of your nose, grey hair, sweaters and ties, canes, etc) and I think it will be adorable.

Star of the Week ~ Kalan

Star of the Week ~ Keanan

Last week our star was Keanan. He loves to work on the farm and horse around with his Dad. His favourite foods are ice cream and peanut butter sandwiches. Keanan's favourite movie is Cars2. Moose Jaw Warrior tickets

As a result of the partnership between the Moose Jaw Warriors and PSSD, we have received vouchers for free tickets. The voucher allows you to receive two free children's tickets with the purchase of an adult ticket. The ticket vouchers are valid for the game on Saturday, January 28th vs the Swift Current Broncos. If you are unable to use the voucher, or do not wish to go, please return it to school and we will pass it on to other students.

This week our star was Owen. He told us about his family, and his dog Lulu. Owen's favourite hockey team is the Montreal Canadiens, and he loves to play Just Dance 3. He brought cookie pizza to share with the class (which was delicious), and he also brought a jar of candy worms. We practiced our estimation skills while guessing how many were in the jar, and the winner got to take them home! Thanks for sharing with us Owen!

Skating!

On Thursday, January 19th from 10:00 until 12:00 our class will be going skating. Miss Karpinski is taking them, along with the Grade 10 class during this time. The Grade 10 students will help tie skates and assist anyone while out on the ice.

Students are asked to bring skates that morning. If you would like your child to wear a helmet during this time, please send it as well. No hockey sticks are allowed during this time. They will be walking to and from the rink, so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather at that time.

Anti-Bullying Shirts

Coronach School is trying to continue our efforts to prevent bullying and raise awareness surrounding this issue. In the past we have had an “Anti-bullying” day by asking the students to wear pink and participating in “stop bullying” lessons/activities on that day.
We would like to offer our students the opportunity to support anti-bullying by purchasing pink T-shirts. There is a special pricing promotion for T-shirts - $5.00/each if we order in bulk by the end of January.

Over the last few weeks we have been working on writing letters. We have written letters to the characters of stories we have read and to Frosty the Snowman. Today we each wrote a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Adams for allowing us to visit their Christmas village and for giving us a cookie for a snack.

Today your child brought home the book "GIFTS" by JoEllen Bogart and Barbara Reid. This is compliments of the Ministry of Education, The Canadian Children's Book Centre, and The TD Bank Financial Group.

The students are HUGE fans of Barbara Reid, as her work with plasticine is amazing. We read the story in class and the students absolutely loved it. I encourage you to read it with them again (and again, and again) over the holidays.

More Christmas Concert Information

With the concert 48 hours away (yikes!), here is what I need to share with you.

1. Tool belts and hockey jerseys can be brought to school Tuesday or Wednesday, as we will be using them for rehearsals.

2. Students should be in the classroom on Wednesday night between 6:30pm and 6:40pm. When the concert is done, your child can be picked up from our classroom.

3. Our concert will be livestreamed to "the world" on that night, which means you can watch it online if you are unable to attend. More information will follow on the blog, as I am not exactly sure how it will work yet... haha

Christmas Gift Exchange

This year, rather than doing a gift exchange we will be collecting money to donate to the Humane Society. Along with the Grade 3 and 4 class, we will collect donations in lieu of a student gift exchange. For Christmas concert we have two songs to sing. The first song we are elves working in Santa's workshop. I would like the children to have blue jeans, and a short sleeve t-shirt (grey, white, red, or green) with no logo or designs on it. They also need to bring a tool belt to wear around their waist. Please make sure the tool belt is empty, as we will be "dancing" and tools will be far too distracting.

The second song, we are children writing letters to Santa, The previous "costume" minus the tool belt will be sufficient. There is not enough time for the students to do a change of clothes, so jeans and t-shirts will work just fine.

Mathletics

Today was the first day the Grade 1 class visited the Mathletics website. Grade 2's ~ well they are professional mathletic competitors and are very comfortable navigating the website. It is a wonderful site full of curriculum based math activities. Each student must sign in, and then activities at their level will be assigned. As your child completes levels, the questions will increase in difficulty. If errors occur, the site will adjust the level of questioning.

Look through the site at home, and help your child become familiar with navigating the website. This is a site we strongly encourage you to use at home ~ the school has paid for a subscription for each child to use, as we feel it is a wonderful supplement to our math curriculum.

Grade 1's for now can focus on Patterning practice (although increasing and decreasing patterns are too difficult for them right now), and some Number practice.

Sign in information is in your child's backpack, on a blue laminated card. Please keep this information in a safe and accessible place.

Conferences and Book Fair

This Thursday evening and Friday morning are Student Conferences. You should have received in the mail your scheduled appointment(s) with teachers. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. We also ask that all conferences be re-scheduled at some point in time so that your child can share what they have been learning.

Conferences are led by the students. They will be sharing with you the many things they are learning, what their strengths are, and what they need to work on. I will be prompting them with questions, but the majority of information flow will hopefully come from them. Feel free to ask your child questions during the conference time. I will assist your child (especially the Grade 1's, as this is a much newer process for them) so that the conference runs smoothly and quickly. Also remember that these conferences are scheduled for only 15 minutes. If you have questions or concerns that have not been addressed during this time, please contact me to make other arrangements to meet. My schedule is tied to many other teachers, and a delay in my conference schedule will cause delays elsewhere.

While you are in the school for conferences, please visit the Scholastic Book Fair in the library. I will not be taking students down there during class time. If you have time to visit the library before or after your conferences you will be impressed with the selection.

Star of the Week ~ Brooklyn

This week our star is Brooklyn. She loves macaroni and cheese. Brooklyn has a dog named Nemo and a cat named Whiskers. Her favourite book is "Dopey Dinosaur goes to school". She loves her Fidget Friend, who danced with us in our classroom! Thanks for sharing Brooklyn!

Your Grade 1 student will be bringing home a sheet that indicates the letters and sounds they know. Our goal for this term is for each Grade 1 student to recognize each letter, and it's sound(s). Please look at the sheet, and practice letters and sounds over the next few weeks. Report cards are not far away, and any extra help in meeting our goal is appreciated.

Has your child come home recently telling you that we have been dancing?

Here is what we have been up to...

In-Motion is an initiative to get kids more active. They aim for an additional 30 minutes of activity in school (not gym or recess) and another 30 minutes at home.

We take "Brain Breaks" to wake our brains up and to get the wiggles out.

We have been dancing, going for quick walks, and many other great things!
