The job of an Author

Today we looked at what an author does.  We discussed how an author can entertain us with stories OR an author can inform us.  We looked at examples in our classroom of entertaining books and information books.     We then organized the books from Scholastic catalogs into 2 categories ~ entertaining or informative.  Here is how it turned out...

Pumpkin Investigation

Today we investigated our "class pumpkin".  We looked at the size of our pumpkin, counted the lines on the outside, measured how tall it is, AND we even counted the seeds!  The most excited part of our investigation was finding out if our pumpkin was going to sink or float.  We made a prediction, and then... dropped it into the bucket.  What do you think happened?

seeds we had?

Did it sink or float?

A reminder that there is a Halloween dance on Tuesday, October 30th at noon.  Students are invited to stay for lunch and enjoy the fun!

On Wednesday, we will be celebrating Halloween in our classroom.  Students can dress in costume for the afternoon only and we will be doing activities to celebrate.

Pumpkin Carving!

Today marked the 5th consecutive year that we have teamed up with Miss Rachul and the Grade 10's.  We appreciate their help in carving, their sense of humour, and their patience.  What a great day we had today!

Star of the Week ~ Keanan

This week our star was Keanan.  He loves to play hockey and baseball.  Keanan's favourite movie is "Spy Kids".  He loves to go camping, and he also loves helping his Dad on the farm.  Keanan's Dad came to read a Scooby Doo story to us, and he brought cupcakes for us to eat! Thanks for sharing Keanan!

Math with Moose Jaw

Yesterday we had another Skype call with Mrs. Cassidy's class in Moose Jaw.  We exchanged solutions to the patterning problems that we made.  Each class also exchanged the strategies they used, and the problems they had while solving each problem.  A few things heard around our room...

"It's cool how they talk about patterns just like we do!"

"They found different answers than we did? Cool!"

You can see all of the interesting things our friends in Moose Jaw are up to by checking their blog at:

Viewing strategies

Today we worked on viewing strategies ~ analyzing and examining what we are looking at or watching.  Your child will bring home a picture, with an attached booklet.  Within this booklet are their ideas about the picture we examined.

Please discuss this with your child tonight.  Can they tell you what the picture reminds them of? Can they talk about the shapes and colours?

Remembrance Day Poem

This is the poem we will be reciting at the Remembrance Day Service this year.  We will work on it in class, but a few students requested that it be posted on the blog so they can practice at home.

Remembrance Day
We wear a poppy
On Remembrance Day,
And at eleven
We stand and pray.
Wreaths are put
Upon a grave.
As we remember
Our soldiers brave.

with lunch!

Guest Reader ~ Giselle Wilson

Today Giselle Wilson came and read and speak to us about success.  She told us that success is not about money, but about doing what makes us happy.  Giselle also told us that if we work hard and persevere, we will be successful.  Thanks so much for visiting us!

P.S.  A special thanks to Giselle for helping our classroom with the chaos of a hot dog lunch! I appreciated the help!

Star of the Week ~ Owen

This week our star was Owen.  He loves to visit West Edmonton Mall, loves to play baseball and hockey, and loves ice-cream and Black Cherry Coke.  Owen has a pet dog named Lulu, and Owen's favourite team is the Montreal Canadians.  Owen and his Mom prepared an "Owen Bingo" game and we learned a lot about Owen! They also brought caramel covered apples for the class as a snack ~ delicious! Thanks for sharing Owen!

Pumpkin Carving

It is official ~ we will be pumpkin carving on Friday, October 26th!  Please send a pumpkin to school with your child, and please write their name in marker on the bottom to eliminate confusion.  Tools for carving can be sent that day, or earlier, but please send them in a plastic bag or container.  All carving will be done by the high school students ~ but we have to do the "dirty work".  This is always a great time for all the students, and we are looking forward to the day!

Thank you in advance!

Author Visit ~ Peter Eyvindson

Today we had the opportunity to listen to Peter Eyvindson.  Peter read us some of his own stories, but also told us stories written by other authors.  It was a great afternoon ~ Thanks Peter!

Word Rings

Just a reminder to keep working on the word rings I have sent home with your child.  Again, these are the most frequent words used in our reading and are essential in building beginning skills.  When your child can confidently read the entire ring, they can bring it back to school and exchange it for another one.

Thank you in advance for your help!
