Today your Grade One child will be coming home with a bag of books. They are calling this "Home Reading", but I am not sending an assignment home with them. These are bags of Math books, and each book is about a number from 1-12.
I have reminded the students of the "rules" when reading at home ~ point to each word when you are reading, look at the pictures for clues, look at the letters to sound out the words, and read your book(s) more than once.
These reading packages are due back next Wednesday ~ thank you for your support!

Thank you to those who have already sent pictures!

Grade 1 Math
Today we learned 2 new words in Math ~ arrangement and subitizing. Subitizing is the ability to recognize an arrangement of numbers without having to count. A basic example of this is recognizing the number rolled on a dice, without actually having to count the dots.
Your child has a "Subitizing bag" coming home tonight that contains dot cards and a dice. Please practice with them tonight, then return the bag to school tomorrow so we can continue to practice.
Thank you for your cooperation!

I haave sent home a Holiday Gift Book catalog from Scholastic today. If you are interested in ordering, please send forms and cheques back to school by Tuesday, November 27th.

Get Caught Reading Challenge!
Today I have "challenged" the Grade 1 and 2 class to "Get Caught Reading". I have asked them to please have someone take pictures of them reading at home, in odd and fun places. I reminded them that all pictures must be appropriate, and show them reading.
Pictures can be emailed to me at elder.christa@prairiesouth.ca and I will print off the pictures to be used for a display at school. We will also upload the pictures to our blogs and then post about how we love reading.
Thank you for your cooperation ~ please email me if you have any questions, and I look forward to seeing the pictures!

Winter Clothes
Now that winter seems to be here to stay, please make sure your child is coming to school dressed for the weather.
Children are sent outside at recess for 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon. They are also outside for 30 minutes at noon. Even if the weather is cold and terrible, we quite often still take them outside.
In the morning, children are also to stay outside until the first bell rings. This means if your child is dropped off, or arrives at school at 8:30am, he/she will be outside for almost 30 minutes. Also, teacher supervision in the morning does not begin outside until 8:45am.

The Wizard of Oz
The trip to see "The Wizard of Oz" was a great success! The play was absolutely fantastic and everyone seemed to love it! All of the Coronach students were very well behaved not only on the bus, but in the theatre as well. I am so proud of them all!
Cameras are not allowed within the theatre, but I did snap a few before and after. The work and activities we do at school will be on their blogs as soon as possible, or on display in the hallways at school.

We were singing on the way up too! "Down by the bay..." |
Waiting patiently to get in! |
Checking out the busy streets of Regina. |
The upside down Christmas tree. My wonderful students decided this was meant to look like the tornado that takes Dorothy away... So smart! |

Scholastic Book Orders
The most recent book orders have arrived and will be coming home tonight.
There are 2 books that did not have a name on the order form ~ and I unfortunately missed this while ordering. One item is a floor puzzle of a gingerbread family, and the other is a board book called "Snowflake Baby". If it helps, the order form was filled out in pink pen ~ sorry for the confusion.

Wizard of Oz
Permission forms for the trip to Regina to see "The Wizard of Oz" are in your child's backpack this evening. Please sign and return by Thursday, November 15th.
Conferences
A reminder that there are Student Led Conferences this Thursday evening and Friday morning. You should have received the schedule in the mail last week.
A few things to remember for the conferences...
1) We all ask that you be on time, and stick to the 15 minute time frame. We are coordinated as a school, and if the Grade 1 and 2 conferences are running late, it will cause the high school conferences to run late as well.
2) These conferences are meant to be student led. Your child will do most of the talking (hopefully) and explaining of their learning. In Grade 1, this is their first attempt at this so I will likely have to direct them more. Grade 2's are familiar with the format, and should be comfortable during the conference.
3) If you have any concerns or questions that are not answered during the conference, please contact me to arrange a time to discuss them. Remember that the 15 minutes conference is for your child to explain to us what they are strong at, what they need to improve at, what they like, don't like, etc.

Feel free to comment on any of the posts ~ the kids love reading what others have to say. It may take awhile for us to reply, as it is a very long process at first...

Nut Allergy
Just a reminder that Coronach is a nut free school. Since Halloween there have been a few treats sent to school that contain nuts. Please double check the ingredients of what is coming to school, especially the Halloween candy/treats.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Remembrance Day
A reminder that our Remembrance Day service will be held this Thursday afternoon at 1:30pm. The community is invited to attend. Our class will be saying a poem during the service, and we have been practicing at school. Any additional practice at home would be appreciated.
If your child has a poppy, please send it to school on Thursday to wear at the service. I would like all students to be wearing one on that day.
Thank you!
Remembrance Day
We wear a poppy
On Remembrance Day,
And at eleven
We stand and pray.
Wreaths are put
Upon a grave.
As we remember
Our soldiers brave.
