On Wednesday, March 6th our class is going skating with Miss K and the Grade 9/10 class from 9am until 10:45am.  Please send students with skates on that day.  If your child is going to be using a stick they MUST bring a helmet and hockey gloves to use.

Visitors

Today the Grade 10 class came down to do an In-motion break with us. Before we danced though, the Grade One and Two class wanted to visit a bit. Do you think they like him?

Thanks to Brandon, James, Aaron, and Mackenzie for visiting and also playing basketball with us in gym!

Shake Rattle and Roll

Today the Grade One class worked on doubles facts. We rolled dice and then charted the sum on paper. We noticed that the numbers 2,3,4 and 5 were the most popular rolls and that the numbers 1 and 6 were more difficult.

Anti-Bullying Day

To bring awareness to the issue of bullying we are asking all students to wear their pink anti-bullying T-shirts (if they have one) or some other type of pink clothing.  We will also be discussing bullying, how to deal with it and how to recognize it on Wednesday.

Thanks!

Friday Skype from Phoenix

Today we Skyped with our classmate Jaylyn who is visiting her grandparents in Phoenix.  She told us about the plane ride (which had really good snacks), what the clouds looked like from the plane, the weather and some of the fun things she is doing!  She went to the zoo AND got to ride a camel!  We invited the Kindergarten class to Skype with us as well so that they could see their classmate Johnathon.  Thanks for keeping in touch and safe travels back to Coronach!

Echolocation with Bats!

While studying bats we have learned about the concept of echolocation.  To further explain this concept, ask your child to explain what they already know AND have a listen to this song...

Blog Posts about Bats and Dr. Brigham

This morning we posted on our blogs about Skyping with Dr. Brigham yesterday.  He provided us with so much information that we are now bat experts too!

The following link will take you to the student blogs:

Home Reading

With the buses not running today there were many students absent.  We did not exchange home reading as there were just too many books missing.  I will do my best to send them out on Thursday. In the meantime, please read as much as you can at home.  Thanks!

Skype Call with Dr. Mark Brigham

Today we had the privilege of a Skype call with Dr. Mark Brigham, a professor at the University of Regina, who is an expert in bats.  As we studied animals and their senses, we started looking at how bats use echo-location to "see" at night.  We made a list of "I wonder..." questions to ask Dr. Brigham and he was more than willing to answer every one of them!  We learned about how fast bats can fly, how big/small bats are, how sensitive their ears are, and even how long a bat's lifespan is!  We learned SO MUCH that we will be doing a blog post on the student's blogs soon!

We greatly appreciate Dr. Brigham taking time from his day to help answer our questions.  The students loved hearing from "Bat Man" and "The Bat Master" (the students named him this after our Skype call...) and we feel fortunate to be a part of his first Skype call to a classroom!

Literacy Skype with Regina

This morning we were invited to join Miss Farnden's (my sister!) classroom for a literacy Skype date!  We were fortunate enough to have Mrs. Fourhorns read to us in Cree and Diesel read to us in French.  Mantaqua and Rabea, from Bangladesh, showed us what the Bengali language looked like, then read to us in Bengali.  Ricca-Mae, who is from the Phillipines, read a short story to us in her language of Talagog.  What a  GREAT experience it was!

We were invited to read to them as well so Mrs. Zopf, our Educational Assistant read a Robert Munsch book to them in French.  Brady Resch also read on of his favourite books, "Brady Brady", to our classes.

As requested by the Grade 2's, who met my sister last year on Skype, she showed us her "famous" skill of reciting the alphabet backwards! Instant "Rock Star" status after doing this...

Skype Date with Florida

This morning we had a Skype date with a classroom in Florida.  They wanted to know about our community and our weather.  They asked us what the temperature was today ~ we tried to explain that it is actually warm here for the winter.  They told us it is "cold" there right now, which lead to a discussion later about how everything is relative ~ our cold is not the same as their cold.  They wanted to know what time it was in Coronach and we also sang them "O Canada".

We wondered about the temperature in Florida and where they were located.  We are 1 hour behind them for time, and we learned that they are 1.5 hours away from Orlando.

We told them that we made videos for them to watch, so that they can have a better understanding of our winter weather, what we wear, and what we do outside for fun.

Animals and the 5 Senses

In our study of the 5 senses, we are also looking at animals and their senses.  We discussed the great sense of smell that dogs have and viewed this video.  It shows a young boy in Regina receiving a Diabetic service dog to assist in monitoring blood sugar levels.

Carol Daniels visit

Carol Daniels ~ First Nations Storyteller

On Tuesday we had the opportunity to visit Palliser Regional Library to listen to First Nations storyteller and artist, Carol Daniels.  She provided us with wonderful stories, demonstrations of her drumming and singing, and we even learned a few Cree words!

Here is the link to Carol using a Nunavut drum to help us while we visualized a whale hunt.

Here Carol demonstrated to us how she tells stories using songs and drums.

In this video, Carol would say the Cree word and we would add the animal sound.

Community partnership

Coronary School is fortunate to have a wonderful SCC and great support from the community. Today the Coronach School signed a partnership with the Hart Butte Community Farm Group. This is a project where community members donate time to farm a donated area of land, and the school receives the profit. We will be able to do landscaping of the school yard, upgrades to the kitchen , and upgrades to our track! Thank you to the Hart Butte group, SCC, Town of Coronach, and Prairie South School Division for helping to creat such a great project!

Supplies

Please ask your child if they are in need of any supplies.  We have a general shortage of pencils, erasers and glue sticks.  There are students who have a shortage of crayons and some with no scissors.  Please send any items needed as soon as possible.

Thank you!

Star of the Week ~ Jaylyn

Last week our star was Jaylyn.  She loves Hello Kitty and the movie "Bolt".  Jaylyn's favourite food is lasagna and she loves to eat at "Charlies Place".  Jaylyn brought Oreo and cookie dough cupcakes for the class as a snack ~ thank so much!

Grade One Math

Today the Grade One class is bringing home a letter that explains our next unit in Math ~ involving number sense and addition/subtraction strategies.

We are working on developing strategies to help us understand addition right now.  The first strategy is called "Counting On", where we put the larger number in our head and count on from that number.  For example, if the question is 6+1=___, we would put the 6 in our head and count one bigger.  So far we have worked on counting on by one and two.

I will keep you informed of other strategies we will be using once they are taught in the classroom.  Thank you for continuing to support this at home.

Valentine's Day

The Grade 12 class will be having a Valentine's Day bake sale as a fundraiser for Graduation.  It will be on Thursday and all items will be sold for $1.

If your child is bringing Valentine cards to school for Thursday, they will be given time to hand them out during the day.  The only thing I ask is that if you do send cards, there must be one for each student in the class.  Thank you for your support.

Bucket Lists

Today we blogged about our "Bucket List" and all the things we would like to do before we turn 100 years old!  I am so impressed with the items the students came up with and how much improvement has been made with their blogging!

I hope you enjoy reading their posts!
