Grade 1 and 2 Graphing

This morning we sorted Smarties and graphed our results.  We were excited to eat the data when we were done graphing!  We then discussed commercials ~ what are they for? what do they use to get your attention?  I told the students that I can remember, and still sing, the Smarties song from 30 (or so) years ago.  We viewed that commercial, and came up with 3 things that commercials use: humour, a song or jingle, or a
famous celebrity.

Here is a sample of the commercials we viewed today:

Smarties ~ 1980

Smarties ~ 1990

Smarties ~ 1994

Metis Presentation

Today we listened to Randy Gaudry present to us about Metis people.  We enjoyed his presentation and learned many new things about the Metis people and their history.

Star of the Week ~ Mrs. Elder

For the last week of school our star was Mrs. Elder.  She was born in Drumheller, Alberta a LONG time ago.  Mrs. Elder loves to spend time with her family, and also loves to go golfing.  Her favourite book is "I Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch because it makes her cry.  Mrs. Elder loves spaghetti and meatballs, and sweet and sour meatballs with rice.  She wants to travel the world and read lots of books when she grows up.  Mrs. Elder didn't bring baking for the class, because she is not that great of a baker...
This is one of the many pictures that have
me and a dinosaur together.
The students obviously misunderstood that I was
born where many dinosaurs where discovered, NOT
when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth...

Blog Posts on Structures

This morning we blogged about our study of structures, specifically the beaver dam.  Have a look and feel free to comment ~ thanks!

http://kidblog.org/MrsEldersClass2012/

Studying Structures and Materials

While studying Structures and Materials we looked at the structure of a beaver dam.  We looked at a few short videos, and then this BBC video below.  We clearly chose the BBC video as our favourite, mostly because we thought they had the best underwater footage.

We also had many questions about this video ~ I wonder how they got the cameras underwater and in the beaver lodge? I wonder how long it takes to build the dam and the lodge?  I wonder how they know where the entrance is? I wonder how they picked the music, because I really like it!

Have a look at our favourite video by using the link below:

What I found today...

My Summer Challenge to my students!

I don't love animals, and I try not to scream or start to cry when I am around them.
Today I met a chameleon.
I did not scream, or start to cry, but my heart was racing ~ I was scared.

I decided to once again (there was a turtle "incident" 2 years ago...) to challenge my students over the summer.  If I could hold this chameleon and let it climb all over me, then they too could find something they were scared of and just do it!  This might mean jumping off of the diving board, trying a new food, or learning to ride a bike.  I reminded them that they were to stay safe and not put themselves in danger during this challenge.

So during the summer, face a fear then send me a picture! We will show everyone how brave we are!

If I didn't scream this year,
that's improvement right?

Crimson String Quartet

On Thursday we had a visit from the Crimson String Quartet.  We got to listen to wonderful musical selections and we also got a lesson in rhythm and beat.  Part of the lesson can be seen in the video clip below ~ you will hear half of us saying "I would like to eat a banana" while the other half is saying "yum".  The video clip of the quartet playing Cold Play, is where we were to be listening for the rhythm and beat.  Your child should be able to listen to the song, and tell you when to say "I would like to eat a banana" and "yum, yum, yum".

Track and Field

A huge thank you to all the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, and any other family that came out to support our students at track on Wednesday.  I think that our decision to include the Grade 1s and 2s this year was a good one ~ the students seemed to have a wonderful day!  I am very proud of the sportsmanship and athletic ability that was shown by each of them!

Father's Day Blog Posts

Today we posted about all the great Dads, Grandpas, and Uncles out there!  Feel free to have a look, leave a comment, and pass the link on to any other family members who would be interested.

Thanks for the continued support!

Returning Word Rings

Thank you for continuing to work on word rings with your child.  Many students have finished 5 or 6 rings in the last few weeks ~ congratulations!  Please start returning those rings that are still at home, so that they can be used again next year.  We will work with the students at school to get done as many as possible before school is done! Thanks!

Materials and Objects

Our current Science unit is on Materials and Objects.  We have been discussing different objects, and why those objects are made with certain materials.  Why are tents made of soft, light fabric BUT a doghouse is made from wood?  Why is an umbrella made of soft fabric, BUT rubber boots are made all rubber?  Why don't people wear wooden shoes all the time?  Your child should be bringing home a small booklet ~ have them explain to you the pictures they have drawn, and why those items are made the way they are.
Our computer tables are made of wood so
that they are strong, sturdy, and will
hold up equipment.

Running shoes are made of rubber on the
bottom to help cushion and protect.

Rider Pride

Rider Pride at school will officially start this Friday, when the Saskatchewan Roughriders travel to Edmonton to play the Eskimos in their first exhibition game of the season.  Please help you child to find some green to wear on Friday ~ the more the better!

Thank you for your continued support and GO RIDERS!

Elementary Track and Field

This Wednesday, June 12th, Coronach will host an Elementary Track and Field day.  This year the Grade 1 and 2 class will be participating in most events during the day.  We plan to start at 10am and end at 2pm, allowing for neighboring schools to travel.  Groups are organized according to Grade ~ for example the Grade 1 girls will participate in events with the other Grade 1 girls in attendance. Each group will have an adult leader for the day.  Please respect these leaders ~ let them know if you are taking your child away from the group for some reason.

Please send appropriate clothing for the weather on that day.  A hat, sunscreen, and bug spray can be sent if you like.  Also make sure that your child has appropriate footwear for a day of activities outside.

There will be a canteen available on that day as well.  You can send money with your child, and additional snacks and drinks if you wish.  The price list is as follows:

Hamburgers $2.00
Hot Dogs $1.50
TCBY (frozen yogurt) $2.50
Pop/Water $1.00
Baking $0.50
Freezies $0.50

So far the weather looks like it will cooperate with us!
We hope to see you out there supporting our students!
Thanks!

Summer Vacation Posts

The students posted on their blog to share what they plan on doing for summer vacation.  They were also asked to guess what I might be doing over the summer.  It looks like I am sleeping in, drinking coffee, and hanging out on my deck all summer ~ sounds wonderful!

Please have a look and leave a comment, or two.
Thanks!

Final Weeks of Word Rings

Any Grade 1 and 2 students who have word rings at home should bring them back by June 14th.  Please finish as many rings as possible before that time, and return any rings to school so students can use them again next year.

Thanks!

Star of the Week ~ Hayden

Last week our star was Hayden.  He loves to farm, play Lego, and ride his quad.  Hayden has 2 cats named Minky and Pinky.  Hayden's favourite foods are hamburger and fries, chicken wings, and potatoes, and puffed wheat cake for dessert!  Hayden brought us a snack every day this week ~ puffed wheat cake, yogurt parfaits, veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, and even fruit pizza! Thanks so much Hayden!
