Dear Parents,
From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you for this group of kids. It has been an absolute pleasure to teach them and I consider myself very fortunate to be their teacher again next year.
Have a wonderful summer, and thank you for your support over the past year!
Sincerely,
Christa

Giselle Wilson was here today to speak about the Summer Reading Program from the Palliser Library. Your child has received a Summer Reading "passport" to document their reading. Each book, or chapter of a book, counts as 1 entry in their passport. Please put 5 entries per page.
For every 5 entries your child documents, they receive a small prize from the library.
Once their passport book is full, they receive a larger prize!
Thank you for the continued support with your child's reading!

Supply List for Fall 2018
To keep Grade One and Two as organized as possible, I have a few requests in regards to our supply list for next year.
Duotangs (12) should be divided up as 4 red, 4 blue, 4 green and 4 yellow. This is how we organize specific subjects and only these 4 colours are used. Please do NOT label these duotangs with your child's name.
I also ask that you do NOT label the following supplies, as they are in a shared container while we work: Pencils, Glue Sticks, Erasers, and Kleenex.
ALL other supplies should be clearly labelled so that if lost, they can be quickly returned to your child.
Thank you in advance and see you again next year!

Healthy Routines
As we finish up our Health Units we are looking at what healthy routines look like for Grade One students. Today your child is bringing home a page to guide them for Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
This activity is meant to help them improve on anything they may not currently do, such as make their bed or brush their teeth.
Please return the completed worksheet on Wednesday, and thank you in advance for your help!

Bike Rodeo
Tomorrow afternoon is the annual Bike Rodeo. Students are asked to bring a bike and helmet to school Tuesday morning and to also wear suitable clothing/footwear. We will walk our bikes to the Sportsplex as a group and begin the activities once we are down there.
Special thanks to the Coronach EMT for organizing the Bike Rodeo again this year!

When Science Happens Across the Street
We live in a small town. So when a house moves in it's BIG NEWS! And when that house is moving in across from the school, that's REALLY BIG NEWS!!! It's also a Science lesson so off we went to watch the magic of moving a house!
Kindergarten Visit
We are spending this morning with the Kindergarten class, who are only days away from becoming Grade One students! We are learning all about what Grade One will be like AND doing some work with compound words! Have a look at what we are busy at!

The Summer Slide
This was sent out by Prairie South today and with the end of the school year approaching I felt compelled to share this with all of you. Your child has worked SO hard this year to learn new skills, become fluent readers and use their comprehension strategies. Continuing to read over the summer months is vital so that children don't lose those skills they have worked so hard at. I know the summer months usually mean very different routines for you and your family but I encourage you (actually I'm begging you) to continue reading each day with your child.
From Prairie South:
From Prairie South:
Between the end of one school year and
the start of the next every student risks what is known as the summer slide.
With the final bell right around the corner, this is a weighty topic on every
parent and educator’s mind.
On average, students lose 2 months of reading
skills over the summer.
Ways to incorporate reading into your
summer plans
•Take a trip to your local library
•Bring a book with you to the park or
the beach
•Read a chapter in the morning, when
your child is used to learning and before other plans cause distraction
Studies show that reading four to five
books over the summer has a positive impact comparable to summer school
enrolment. Plus, this gives your child a chance to choose books that he or she
is interested in, keeping the activity fun and interesting too!
Children are at risk of losing more than
just academic knowledge during the summer – physical fitness levels also take a
hit. Encouraging physical activity all summer long will help your child stay at
peak mental form, as physical health is known to enhance academic performance.
Ways to incorporate physical activity
into your summer plans
•Sign your child up for a team sport
•Encourage learning a new skill such as
swimming
•Go on walks and explore your city
Be sure to take advantage of all the
different opportunities to get outside and get active.
Regular physical activity can lead to
increased concentration and improved mathematics and test scores.
The use of technology offers many
opportunities to encourage summer learning. Through promoting vital skills like
problem solving and critical thinking, educational games are a valuable way to
allow technology to your summer learner.
Ways to incorporate educational
technology into your summer plans
•Challenge your child to a new high
score on an educational app
•Start a tech project together – like a
toy robotics kit
•Teach kids through your own tasks – ie.
baking a cake, or fixing a bicycle
Between 65,200 educational apps, various
tech-based toys, and even just household activities, there are an endless
supply of tech projects to use to encourage summer learning for your child.
Summer learning is important!

General Info about Track
A few things to keep in mind for track tomorrow.
- it's in Bengough and should be starting at approximately 10am
- we are taking a bus to Bengough and plan to leave at 9am from the school
- pack for the appropriate weather (sunscreen, hats, bug spray, etc)
- all items must fit into a backpack that your child will carry with them for the day
- there is a canteen available (please check the previous post for prices) so we encourage you to discuss the menu choices with your child and send the necessary money
- you can also send other snacks and drinks with your child for the day (water, granola bars etc)
- we will leave track in time for students to go home on their regular bus route
Each student will be assigned to a group and each group will have a leader. To make the day run smoothly we ask that you please respect the leaders and volunteers during the day. Students should not be leaving their group during the day to find friends, parents, go for snacks etc and if at any time they have to leave the group, their leader MUST be made aware.
Thanks in advance and see you tomorrow!
