Carol Daniels visit

Carol Daniels ~ First Nations Storyteller

On Tuesday we had the opportunity to visit Palliser Regional Library to listen to First Nations storyteller and artist, Carol Daniels.  She provided us with wonderful stories, demonstrations of her drumming and singing, and we even learned a few Cree words!

Here is the link to Carol using a Nunavut drum to help us while we visualized a whale hunt.

Here Carol demonstrated to us how she tells stories using songs and drums.

In this video, Carol would say the Cree word and we would add the animal sound.

100th Day of School

Thanks!

Community partnership

Coronary School is fortunate to have a wonderful SCC and great support from the community. Today the Coronach School signed a partnership with the Hart Butte Community Farm Group. This is a project where community members donate time to farm a donated area of land, and the school receives the profit. We will be able to do landscaping of the school yard, upgrades to the kitchen , and upgrades to our track! Thank you to the Hart Butte group, SCC, Town of Coronach, and Prairie South School Division for helping to creat such a great project!

Supplies

Please ask your child if they are in need of any supplies.  We have a general shortage of pencils, erasers and glue sticks.  There are students who have a shortage of crayons and some with no scissors.  Please send any items needed as soon as possible.

Thank you!

Star of the Week ~ Jaylyn

Last week our star was Jaylyn.  She loves Hello Kitty and the movie "Bolt".  Jaylyn's favourite food is lasagna and she loves to eat at "Charlies Place".  Jaylyn brought Oreo and cookie dough cupcakes for the class as a snack ~ thank so much!

Grade One Math

Today the Grade One class is bringing home a letter that explains our next unit in Math ~ involving number sense and addition/subtraction strategies.

We are working on developing strategies to help us understand addition right now.  The first strategy is called "Counting On", where we put the larger number in our head and count on from that number.  For example, if the question is 6+1=___, we would put the 6 in our head and count one bigger.  So far we have worked on counting on by one and two.

I will keep you informed of other strategies we will be using once they are taught in the classroom.  Thank you for continuing to support this at home.

Valentine's Day

The Grade 12 class will be having a Valentine's Day bake sale as a fundraiser for Graduation.  It will be on Thursday and all items will be sold for $1.

If your child is bringing Valentine cards to school for Thursday, they will be given time to hand them out during the day.  The only thing I ask is that if you do send cards, there must be one for each student in the class.  Thank you for your support.

Bucket Lists

Today we blogged about our "Bucket List" and all the things we would like to do before we turn 100 years old!  I am so impressed with the items the students came up with and how much improvement has been made with their blogging!

I hope you enjoy reading their posts!

Star of the Week ~ Colton

Last week our star was Colton.  He loves playing with his friends, playing video games and reading hockey books.  Colton's favourite place to be is at home, and his favourite movie is Open Season 3.  Colton also brought us some delicious blue cake for a snack ~ thanks Colton!

Winter Poem

Today we started working on a Winter poem, that we will recite in class.  It is short, and students will practice with me each day but some extra work at home would be great.  I will work with them on rhythm, voice changes, volume, etc for their presentation to the class.  Students will recite/present on Friday, February 8th.  Here is the poem:

A Chubby Little Snowman
A chubby little snowman,
had a carrot nose.
Along came a bunny,
and what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny,
looking for his lunch,
Ate that snowman's carrot nose.
Nibble, nibble, crunch!

Skating ~ Wednesday morning

On Wednesday morning the Grade 1 and 2 class will be going skating with Miss K.

If your child would like to bring a stick they MUST also have hockey gloves and a hockey helmet.  They will be given a soft puck to use during their time at the rink, and good sportsmanship is expected.

Helmet use for students who will be skating with no sticks is at at the parent's discretion.

Spelling Words

Due to the short week, we won't have spelling words this week.

That's What Makes You Beautiful

This was one of our Brain Breaks this morning.  We viewed the video afterwards to discuss what we saw.  The students looked at whether or not they were moving, how they were moving, and the other actions they saw.  We then talked about how we can improve how we dance during our Brain Breaks.

Books Orders

Our January book orders are on the way and should be here next week.  The new February catalogs were sent home today ~ anyone wishing to order should return them by Thursday, January 31st.

Thank you !

Brain Breaks

As you are aware, our classroom does "Brain Breaks" during the day.  The most common way we do this is to dance, usually using Just Dance videos from Youtube.  I am pleasantly surprised at the dance moves and singing voices of the students every day!  Here are two links to our awesome dancing from Friday ~ Enjoy!

Snow Clothes Challenge

In response to a Twitter challenge from our favourite class in Moose Jaw (Ms. Cassidy's class) we practiced  putting on our winter clothing.  Honestly, this is the absolute fastest they have EVER been so a BIG BIG thanks goes out to Ms. Cassidy and her Grade 1 and 2 class.  Here is the link to our video ~ enjoy!

Grade One Math

In Grade One Math we are learning about the numbers between 10 and 20 ~ the teens.  We have discovered that the "teens" are 10 and then a bit more.  We built teen numbers on our 10 frames today and also sang this song ~ Numbers in the Teens.

Have a listen at home ~ and if the song gets stuck in your head, I'm sorry!

100th Day of School

The 100th Day is fast approaching and the students are getting excited.
The 100th day of school is February 12th.

The students would like to continue the tradition of dressing up as a 100 year old person.  They enjoyed this very much last year so we are looking forward to it again!

We will plan for other activities as well during the day but two things that will be a guarantee are the dressing up, and bringing 100 of something for snack.  Past years have seen Cheerios, pretzels, raisins for snack if you need ideas.

Thank you for your support!

Viewing Strategies

Today we worked on our viewing strategies.  We looked at food pictures ~ yum ~ and discussed each of them.  We asked questions like "What colours do you see?", "What shapes do you see?", "What is your favourite part of the picture and why?", and "What does this remind you of?"

Here is an example:
This reminds me of...
"Smores around the campfire"
"Dessert at Grammas house"
"The Mini-Mart"
"Fresh chocolate chip cookies"

The Sense of Taste

Today we explored our sense of taste.  We looked at the "taste zones" on our tongue and then started tasting.  Sour was first, using a lemon, followed by some sweet Skittles.  We tried a few salty pretzels, and finished with a cup of bitter coffee.

Some loved the lemons!

Not sure about this...

YUCK!!!

GROSS!!

Whoa that is awful!

Everyone loved the sweet taste of Skittles!

We all loved salty pretzels too!

Coffee to finish wash it all down!
Coffee ~ we liked the smell of coffee
better than the taste.

Mathletics

Students brought home Mathletics cards this evening ~ green laminated cards with username and password on it. Mathletics is a site focused on Math skills that are closely linked to our Saskatchewan curriculum.  Today the Grade One class went on for the first time and were very excited!  Students will become more familiar with the site as we work with it, but have a look at it from home as well.

For those students who did not receive a card, usernames and passwords are being established by Mathletics as soon as possible.  When they forward us the new information I will send it home with your child.

Tacos for Telemiracle

On Friday, January 25th the Coronach Kinettes will host a Taco-in-a-bag sale, with proceeds going to Telemiracle.  Lunch will be $5 and comes with a juice box.  Students and their family are invited to order and come to the school that day for lunch.

Order forms are being sent home today and should be returned by Friday, January 18th.

If you know of anyone who is interested in attending but has no students in school, please have them contact Kelly Elder at gk.elder@accesscomm.ca to place their order.  Payment for emailed orders can be made on that day.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Scholastic Book Orders

Tonight your child will bring home 7 (yes 7, I'm sorry) Scholastic catalogs.  These are the January catalogs and anyone interested in placing an order, please have them returned by Tuesday, January 22nd.

Thank you for your orders ~ I appreciate it!

Bug Obsession

Students last year became obsessed with the App "Bugs and Buttons".  We have added "Bugs and Numbers" and "Bugs and Bubbles" to our Ipads and the students are once again obsessed.  These apps are great for number sense, sorting, and some plain old fun!

Word Rings

A reminder to keep working on the word ring that your child has at home.  Many children have been exchanging rings for new ones and are reading them with such confidence ~ keep up the great work!

Spelling Words (January 14th-18th)

We won't be working on spelling words this week.
I plan to use the time working and reinforcing vowels and their sounds.  Any additional help you can do at home with your child would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
