Word Rings

Thank you to everyone for working so hard on the word rings that have been sent home!  Many students have already switched for a new ring!

We are going to check-in with each student on their helper day and have them read their word ring to us.  For example, if your child is a helper on Wednesday we will read their word ring with them EACH Wednesday and exchange if necessary.  Please make sure that the word ring is back at school on your child's helper day.

If your child is ready to exchange BEFORE their helper day/check-in day, please send it back to do an exchange.  We don't want to slow down their progress but rather set a check in day to encourage consistent and daily practice.

If you have any questions or concerns please let us know, and we thank you in advance for your help and support with this work.

Drive Away Hunger

In recognition of World Food Day on Friday, October 17th, employees at Farm Credit Canada and local food banks across Saskatchewan will be collecting donations of food and money for people who are hungry in our province.

Coronach School  is  once again participating in the FCC Drive Away Hunger food campaign.  Below is a list of the most need food items according to Food Banks Canada:
Pasta (canned or dried)
Canned vegetables or fruit
Canned or powdered milk
Canned goods (beans, soups, stews)
Pasta sauces
Flour
Whole grain cereals
Rice
Canned meat or fish
Infant foods and baby formula

Last year we collected 859 pounds of food and we are hoping to beat that total this year.
Bags have been sent home and collections will be taken from September 29th-October14th.

October "Got Caught Reading" Challenge

Today your child will bring home the October Reading Challenge.  Thank you to everyone who participated in the September Challenge.  Once again we have a few ideas to guide your at home reading.  Please email any photos you wish to share of your child reading to elder.christa@prairiesouth.ca

Word Rings for Sight Words

Today your child will bring home a word ring full of sight words.  These are words that are essential to building their reading skill and fluency.

The Grade Two students will bring home the ring they finished with last year.  Continue to practice these words and when they can read them without hesitation, please return them to school for the next word ring.

Grade One students will bring home the first ring of words.  These are the most common words we see when reading and prove to be very important for beginning readers.  Practice these words as much as possible, until your child can confidently and consistently read them.  When they are confident in their current word ring, please send it back to school and we will exchange it for the next word ring.

The Grade One students will also be working on sight words during our learning station time over the next few weeks.  Thank you for your support and time with the work being sent home.  This is the first step in building confident readers, and we thank you for helping us with this task.

This week is another busy week at Coronach School! Tomorrow at 2pm we will host our Annual Terry Fox Run. This is a joint event with our great community, so please come and join us. Healthy Habits Blog Post

Walk to School Challenge

October 6-10 is Walk to School Week and Coronach School is taking part in a Saskatchewan in motion challenge designed to get more kids walking and biking to school. Our school has a chance to win $1,000 for sports and physical activity, students who walk all five days could win a $250 bundle of active toys and gear and there’s a prize for every student who walks at least once.

Although walking to school is one of the easiest ways to build activity into your child’s day, only 28% of Canadian kids do so these days. That’s why Saskatchewan in motion is challenging families to give walking a try at least once during Walk to School Week.

All students will bring home a Walking Passport and more information about the challenge. We hope you’ll take up the challenge to Give Walking a Try at least once during the week. Students who walk or bike to school arrive relaxed and ready to learn. They build independence, develop social skills and get some of the 60 minutes of physical activity they need every day.

CTV Hometown Tour and Community Lunch

CTV news will be in Coronach this Thursday, September 25^th and they will be stopping at the school for the lunch hour!  The Town of Coronach is providing a FREE lunch for all students, staff and COMMUNITY members from Schnell’s Food Truck!  The food truck will be parked in the high school parking lot, and we will have a few tables and chairs set out for the lunch!  

The younger students, K-6 will be served their lunch beginning around 11:45am to ensure that they get their food.  We are creating a few posters to welcome the news crew and hopefully a few students, staff and/or community members will want to be interviewed during the lunch hour to promote/brag about what a beautiful community we have!

We are also asking all students to wear GREEN to show their support for the Saskatchewan Roughriders during the CTV visit that day.

Please try to find some time to come out for some free lunch, a nice visit and a wave or a pose for the cameras!

Real Food Rots!

This week we have started looking at healthy and non-healthy foods. We started with a discussion about preservatives in food to make it last longer and how real food rots. We made predictions about which foods in our experiment we think would rot the fastest. Over the next few days we will be observing our experimental foods and seeing how close our predictions were.

5k Walk/Run

This Friday afternoon is our annual 5k walk/run. Students are not required to go the entire distance, and the adult who is assigned to each group can determine and/or adjust the best distance.

Healthy Habits

We have started discussing healthy habits in our classroom and the various ways we can be healthy, both in school and at home. As a class, we will be creating a book on healthy habits starring the Grade 1 and 2's. We will be spending the next week or two taking pictures of us being healthy to put into our book. Some of our pictures will feature people eating something healthy, either at snack or at lunch. In order for everyone to get a chance to be in these pictures, I ask that you help them pack a lunch or snack that features a few healthy options to include in our pictures.

Education Week ~ Celebrating Success

This year the theme of Education Week is “Supporting and Celebrating Success”.  In the past, we have celebrated the success of people in our community, this year, we want to celebrate the success of our students—we know that these are many!  We need your help to do this!  We would love if you would take some time to send us pictures/videos of your students doing something “successful”.  Please keep in mind that these successes do not have to be huge and life altering…success is different for each person.  These success videos/pictures can be anything from: tying shoes to writing their name for the first time to reading to riding a bike without their training wheels.  Also, things such as: swimming lessons, diving, catching a fish, sleeping in a tent, rodeo or playing ball.  Please send us your pictures, we hope to put a PowerPoint together to showcase the great things our students are doing.  You can attach your pictures/videos and email them back to your Staff Companion or send them straight to Rachul.ashley@prairiesouth.ca or elder.christa@prairiesouth.ca

Classroom blogs

As we begin blogging in our classroom I would like to share a few reminders about posting comments. We strongly encourage people to comment on student blogs.  It shows students that they are writing for an audience and that their work is important to people.  We do our best to reply to comments and continue the conversation, but please be patient with us as we are learning to blog. 

When commenting we ask that you do not add any last names of students or your own last name.  This is the best policy in regards to student privacy and safety.  You can refer to yourself as Mom, Dad, or Grandma, and even Grandpa from Saskatoon, but please don't refer to last names.

We also strongly encourage you to use best spelling, punctuation, and grammar practices when submitting comments. We use comments and blog posts as a learning tool, so we ask that you do your best to capitalize, use punctuation etc. when submitting.

Day 5 in our classroom and we are already blogging!  This is big news for us as we LOVE to blog about what we are doing in our classroom.

Get Caught Reading ~ September

Today your child will bring home a "Get Caught Reading" bookmark for the month of September.  We would like the students to complete as many of the items as possible during the month of September.  Many of the items can be done simultaneously, such as "Get caught reading outside" and  "Get caught reading a book about animals".

Students can return them to school once they are completed! Thank you for your support of this project!

Spirit Week

The SRC has started the year planning fun and exciting events for all our staff and students.  We are going to have a Spirit Week/Dress Up Days next week.  Below is the list of days!  Please let us know if you have any questions!

This Friday will be Rider Day at Coronach School.  If your child has any Rider gear, or and green clothing, please have them wear it on Friday to help cheer on the Riders in Winnipeg!  Thank you!

Who Will be in our Classroom?

As we are preparing for the upcoming school year, I wanted to let you know who "WE" actually are.  
I (Christa Elder) will be in the classroom full time.

Mrs. Donna Dyck is scheduled to be in our classroom every morning.  She will be teaching Grade 2 Math, and we will be team teaching Language Arts to Grade One and Two.  Our plan is to separate these two grades as much as possible for Language Arts instruction.

Our classroom is also very fortunate this year to have Miss Jessica Gent teach with us.  She is interning in our classroom through the University of Regina Faculty of Education program.  She will be in our classroom from September until the end of December.  She has a dual role during the time in our classroom, and will be not only a teacher but will be a student as well.  As Miss Gent spends time in our classroom she will take on additional teaching responsibilities to a point where she will be the classroom teacher for the month of November.  I will supervising the entire time, however daily classroom responsibilities and management will be in her hands.  I am excited to see what Miss Gent has to offer to the students, and I am excited to learn from her during her time here!

We are all very excited for the upcoming school year and look forward to getting to know your children.

Star of the Week Schedule

Every week we have a "Star of the Week" within our classroom.  This allows us to learn a little more about each student in the room.  When your child is scheduled to be the "star", they will have small bulletin board display to fill with answers to a variety of questions.  A few days before your child is scheduled to be "star", a bag will come home that contains a list of the questions to be answered, cards to write the answers on, and enough room in the bag to send any other items of interest to school for display.

Some of the questions are things like favourite toys, favourite food, pets, etc.  Please answer most of the questions, and try to send a picture or two for the display.  Your child will present their bulletin board to the class, and then we write a book about your child with the information we have learned.

In the past, some students have brought snacks or a special pet at some point during their week.  Please be aware that this is not necessary and in no way are you obligated to do these things.  We can  however make arrangements for this if it is something you would like to do.

Show and Tell Schedule

The practice of show and tell in the classroom allows for many learning opportunities ~ speaking, listening, questioning techniques, answering appropriately, and the sharing of interesting items from a student's life.  We will have show and tell for approximately one week each month.  Your child will share on their designated helper day ~ so if your child is a Monday helper, they will have show and tell on Monday of show and tell week.

Please help prepare your child for their time to share ~ talk about where they got the item, why it is special, and any other relevant details.  Students in the class will ask your child about what they bring, so having details and answers prepared is helpful.

On Wednesday, September 5th from 3:30-5:30 we will be hosting an Open House at the school.  This is an opportunity to meet the staff, look around at the changes in the school, and have an ice-cream sundae at the same time!  We invite your entire family to join us as we begin the 2014-2015 school year!

As a project for the Open House, we please ask that you send your child's favourite book to school with them on Tuesday or Wednesday.  Thank you!

Back to School Reminders

A few things to keep in mind as the school year begins:

1) SRC fees are due on or before September 5th.  This is a $15 fee payable by cheque to Coronach School.  This fee covers $5 for the Christmas dinner and $10 for other events sponsored by our SRC.

2) Students who stay for lunch have approximately 25 minutes to eat before heading outside.  Although students will have access to a microwave, the line can often be quite long and may take a lot of time.  Please consider this when sending food with your child.  Food that has to boil, or cook for lengthy periods of time is not the best option to send with such a short lunch break. If you send an item that needs to be microwaved, please make sure your child has an idea of how long. Many parents have a sticky note within the lunch kit to use as a guide.

3) Teachers supervise during the lunch break but they are required to move between classrooms so there may not be a teacher in the room at all times.  It is important that your child can open/close containers that are being sent in their lunch.  We also strongly suggest that healthy snacks, lunches, and drinks be sent with your child to school.

4) I also ask that you do not send any birthday invitations to school.  The delivery of the invitations and the hurt feelings that may follow tend to disrupt the routine of the day so we kindly request that they be delivered at another time and place.  Thank you.

Family Emails

Some of my communication to parents is done with email.  Unless it is an immediate emergency, I will usually send an email to ask questions, communicate concerns, send reminders, etc.

If you would please send me an email at the address shown below so that I can have your email address on my computer, I would greatly appreciate it.  It can be short and sweet and just needs to tell me who you are ~ Thanks!

Daily Snack

Each morning we will have a small snack at about 10:40 (depending on schedules).  When sending a snack from home please be aware of  the following things:

1) We encourage you to send healthy and nutritious snacks with your child each day.
2)  Please be aware that we will have about 10 minutes to have snack.  Please send your child something that they can eat within this time frame.
3) Make sure that your child can open/close the container that is sent.
4)  Microwave use will not be allowed during snack time.
5)  Although our school does have a snack program, please do not assume that there is a snack provided each day.  Depending on schedules and funding, snack may not be available.  This program should be seen as a supplement to a snack that is already sent, and not as a guarantee each day.

Each day in our classroom we have helpers.  Your child will be assigned a day, and their job will rotate on a weekly basis.  Their jobs are things such as Smartboard, Calendar, Weather, Fishbowl, Photographer, and Line Leader/General Helper.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school everyone!  I hope that you had a relaxing summer and that you were able to enjoy time with family and friends.

The End of School and the Beginning of Summer!

Congratulations to all of my students (and their parents) on the completion of another year of school! We have seen such growth in all of the students and it has been a wonderful year full of learning.  For those students who are moving on to Grade 3 ~ I know that you will love Grade 3 and I hope that you will peek your head into Grade 1 and 2 once in awhile to say "Hello".  To my Grade 1 students who are coming back to me as Grade 2's ~ I can't wait! We will have another exciting year next year!  And for those of you who may have students coming into my Grade 1 class ~ Welcome! Grade 1 is such an exciting year full of growth and learning and I can't wait to meet your children!

To the parents ~ I can't thank you enough for trusting me with your children.  I ask a lot of them, and of you, and I appreciate all of the support you have provided for them, and me.  The reading, word rings, commenting on blogs, sending snacks ~ the list is endless.  All of your work does not go unnoticed and I am truly grateful for all that you do.  I would also like to thank all of those who texted, talked to me, or sent gifts as a thank you for teaching this year.  It was not necessary, but each one is very much appreciated.

I want you all to have an absolutely wonderful and relaxing summer, and I can't wait to see you in the Fall!

Our Last Blog Post of the Year

Last Few Days of Classes

As the last few days of the school year approach, I just want to remind you of a few things:

1) The last day of classes is on Wednesday, June 25th.  Most of the school supplies will be coming home on that day so please send adequate book bags on that day so that it can be packed up properly.
2) Report cards will be given out on the morning of Friday, June 27th.  There are no classes that day but rather a "drop-in" period during the morning to pick up report cards.
3) If you are unable to pick up report cards on that day, please let me know.  The school asks that you send a large self-addressed envelope that has the appropriate postage on it so that the report card can be mailed out.
4) Please return any word rings that are still left at home so that they can be used again next year.
5) I strongly encourage you to read with your child as much as possible over the summer months.  I understand the summer plans and routines make this difficult at times but please do your best.  Keeping up with a reading routine helps to prevent what we call "the summer slide", when children lose some of the skills that they have worked so hard at during the year. Thank you in advance for helping with this.

Word Ring Return

Once again thank you to everyone who has worked so hard on the word rings.  I appreciate all the help from home and I can see the progress as a result.

As the school year ends, I am now asking for the word rings to be returned.  Even if your child has not mastered that word ring yet, please return it to school by this Friday.  These rings are used every year so having them returned to the classroom is important.

Safety and Environment Fair ~ June 13th

Coronach is planning a big safety event for this Friday, June 13^th at the Coronach Sports-Plex.  This event, The Coronach Community Safety and Environment Fair, begins at 1:00pm and everyone is welcome to attend.  See the attached poster for details!

All of the Coronach Students, K-12, are planning to attend the the fair from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.  The teachers are taking their kids down to the rink and circulating through the fair for the afternoon.   If you are planning to attend the fair and you would like to have your child or children stay with you for the remainder of the afternoon (after 3pm), please send a note to homeroom teachers giving your permission before Friday.

Please try to come out and enjoy this free safety event!!   There will be FREE burgers for the entire community after the guest speaker at 5:00pm!!

Wear Red on Tuesday, June 10th

Coronach School is joining the country in honoring the fallen RCMP.  Please wear red tomorrow!!!!

The Spouses of the RCMP have created an event to show their support for the fallen Moncton RCMP officers. We can't all be in Moncton for the memorial service but we can show our support. Let's wear red on Tuesday to show that the fallen, wounded, their families, and all members of the RCMP are in our hearts. 

Word Rings

There are only a few weeks left to help your child work through as many word rings as possible.  Students have made such great progress these last few months and I appreciate all the extra time and help from everyone at home.

I am asking that all word rings be returned to school by Friday, June 20th so that we are able to use them again for next year.  Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation.

Take the Lead

This year the students have been involved in the Take the Lead program when there is organized play during recess times.  This program has been organized by Jodie Langford and most of the Grade 5/6 classroom.  As an activity to celebrate the end of the year they have organized another obstacle course for the students. The obstacle course will be at noon on Tuesday, June 10th and all students are asked to stay for lunch that day so the activities can start right on time and no one will miss any of the fun!

 A big thank you to Jodie and the Grade 5/6 leaders for planning such a great activity!

Outdoor Science

Today we went outside to test our theories on friction. We know that friction occurs when two items rub together, and this causes moving objects to slow down. The slides were a perfect place to test our items for friction.

We discovered that blue jeans cause more friction than shorts!

Elementary Track Day

Wednesday, June 4th is scheduled to be our Elementary Track day.  On that day we will run track and field events for Grade 1-6 students from 10am - 2pm.  Students will be categorized by grade and will participate in each event that is scheduled.

For Wednesday please make sure your child is dressed according to the possible weather.  This could mean anything from rain to sunshine, so layers may be the best option.  Please send sunscreen, a hat, proper clothing (that enables movement, running, jumping), and proper footwear (runners).  All of their things should be in a backpack that they can carry with them during the day.

Michelangelo

Today Miss Larsen taught us about Michelangelo.  She told us he was an artist from a LONG time ago, and then we looked at some of his work.  We looked at the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo painted the ceiling with stories from the Bible.  It took him 7 YEARS to finish this!  So, we thought we would give it a try and we created works of art while working from a new angle!  Here are a few pictures!

Spring Weather reminders

Now that the weather has warmed up (finally), I just want to remind all of you of the dress code policy.

Students are not allowed to wear spaghetti straps, open back shirts, etc.  We have discussed the dress code in class and I have described to students how "lasagna" straps (wider ones) are acceptable.  We also discussed the length of shorts and skirts. The length of shorts/skirts for students must be longer than their fingers when they place their arms at their side.

Although not part of the dress code (and rather a request on my behalf) I ask that as students start to wear sandals and flip flops to school, please send a pair of socks with them as well.  This allows them to wear socks with their indoor shoes and gym shoes, and also helps prevent the creation of any unwanted aromas within the room.

Track and Field

Elementary track is scheduled for June 4th this year and will be held in Coronach.  Students from Rockglen and Bengough School will also be attending.
All students from Grade 1 - 6 will participate in events throughout the day.  A detailed schedule of events will be sent home closer to June 4th.

Spelling Words

There will be no spelling words for this (short) week.  I encourage you to take this time to keep working on the word rings.  The students are making such great progress ~ thank you for your help!!

Word Rings

There are only a few weeks left to finish up as many words rings as possible.  Our goal for most of the Grade One class is to have at least 2 of the buckets completed, and all 4 buckets completed for the Grade Two class.  Please encourage your child to practice a little bit each night and thank you for helping us reach our goal.

Bike Safety Rodeo

This Friday, May 16th there will be a bike safety rodeo at the Sportsplex.
Angela Gent, Carrie Schnell, and the RCMP are running it for our students in Grades 1-6.

Town students are asked to ride their bikes to school that day as we will ride to the Sportsplex together that afternoon.  I am asking that bus students have their bikes brought to school Friday morning so that they can also participate.  Thank you for your help with this.

Shrine Circus tickets

Video Special Effects

To become effective viewers we have looked at how Photoshop is used in media.  Today we looked at a video that showed the use of special effects.  This is a father, who adds special effects to the videos of his son.  We studied not only the visual effects that were added but also the sounds.
