Classroom Routines and Reminders

Just a few things to remember as we start a new school year.

Snacks:
Our classroom has snack every morning at approximately 10:30am.  We encourage you all to send a small, healthy snack that your child can easily and quickly eat before going outside for recess.  Please do not send anything that needs to be microwaved or prepared (such as lunchables/snackables) for snack as there is not enough time to prepare/build and eat. There is a nutrition/snack program within the school that also provides snacks but this is not a guarantee each day and should not be relied on as the only snack option.

Lunch:
As you choose snacks and lunches to send to school please try to send healthy options for food and drinks.  We also ask that you please attach a sticky note to anything that needs to be microwaved, or have your child familiar with the time frame that will be needed.  If the snack or lunch is in a container please have your child familiar with how to open it.  There will be staff members in the lunch room to help if needed but we want to encourage as much independence as possible during this time.

Birthdays:
We do celebrate and acknowledge birthdays within the classroom as they occur but we do ask that you do not send birthday invitations to school.

Dress Code:
Please take a moment to look over the SCC dress code within the school handbook.  A quick overview of the dress code is that spaghetti straps and crop tops are not to be worn at school.  Shorts or skirts must be as long as the student's fingers while resting at their side.

If you have any questions or concerns about any of these items, please contact me at elder.christa@prairiesouth.ca

Show and Tell

Once a month our classroom will have show and tell.  During that week your child will bring an item on their designated helper day (information on helper days will follow).  Show and tell provides an opportunity for students to become comfortable sharing in front of a group, answering questions, listening to others, and practice with asking good questions.

As your child chooses an item to bring, please prepare them for some of the questions they may hear from their classmates, such as "Where did you get that?", "Where do you keep it?".  A bit of casual discussion at home tends to minimize the nervousness students feel while sharing with the class.

Show and Tell will occur during the weeks of:
September 28th
October 26th
November 23rd
December 14th
January 25th
February 22nd
March 21st
April 25th
May 30th
June 20th

Introductions

This year we will have many professionals working within the classroom, in many different capacities.

We are fortunate to have an intern teacher from the University of Regina in our classroom this year.  Mrs. Larissa Mack will be teaching with us from August until the end of December.  She will begin the year observing the classroom routines and procedures, and eventually build up to teaching independently during the month of November.  We look forward to learning everything that Mrs. Mack has to share with our classroom.

Donna Dyck will also be a teacher within our room again this year.  She will co-teach English Language Arts with me, and she will also be teaching Grade 2 Math.

Jodie Langford will be an Educational Assistant within our room this year. She will be a wonderful addition to help facilitate learning within Grade One and Two.

And I will co-teach English Language Arts with Mrs. Dyck.  I will also teach Grade One Math, and all of the Science, Social, Art and Health.

All of us are looking forward to a wonderful year ahead with your children!

Remind

Remind is an app that we use in the classroom to send out reminders of any time sensitive things in the classroom.  If you follow the link below it will take you through the set up for our Grade One and Two classroom Reminders.  You can sign up more than one cell phone as well so that each parent/guardian will receive a reminder text.

It will ask for your phone number (so that reminders will be sent via text message) and it will ask for your name (so that I can see who has signed up).  Please put your name and your child's name (for example:  Christa Elder - Logan's Mom) so that I can easily connect who everyone is.

Please sign up for the Remind app as soon as possible.  I promise to limit the numbers of texts that are sent out and I will not overload your phone.

Thank you!

Welcome Back!

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the summer months and had a chance to relax and spend time with loved ones. Although summer seemed to go by very quickly, I did manage to sneak away to a few ball games, a few rodeos, and did some relaxing during the summer months.

I will be updating the blog over the next week with general information about the classroom ~ routines, expectations, schedules, etc.  Please bookmark this site and check back frequently during the school year as this will be the main form of communication that we use.

We are looking forward to what this school year will bring and for all of the learning that will happen along the way!
