Our Delicious Science Experiment

Studying the 3 states of matter can be exhausting and sometimes a person just needs a snack so...
Today we looked at what happens when you combine a liquid and a solid.  With many options, I chose the most delicious one AND one that produced a gas when mixed.

I present to you, our Science experiment!
Ice Cream (solid) + Root Beer (Liquid) = Foam (Gas)

Liquids and Solids

As we continue to study liquids and solids we have started to look at the process of melting.  This discussion centered around Olaf, the snowman from the movie Frozen.  Olaf is VERY excited for summer to arrive and can't wait to sit in the hot sand, have picnics on warm days, etc.  We studied his theory and plan for summer, then wrote him a letter stating our worry and concern.  We also did a guided drawing activity, and used our best listening skills to draw (then paint) a snowman.  To hear Olaf's summer plans, click here:  Olaf in Summer

Comprehension Homework Sheet

Today your child will bring home a sheet called "Comprehension Check".  We ask that it be completed this evening and returned to school tomorrow morning.  We have discussed the expectations and instructions with the students but here is an overview of them:

1) These will go home EVERY Monday and must be returned on Tuesday morning.
2) We ask that the work be done as independently as possible by the student.  You can help with the reading or printing for example, but please allow the students to find the answers on their own as much as possible.
3) Students must document how their answers were found by coloring the  answer within the passage with the requested color.
4) Answers must be done in a complete sentence, in their best printing.

For the first few times we do this activity, prompting and some direction from you may be necessary. We hope that the students can build independent work habits and confidence in this skill as the weeks go on.  For the first few weeks the reading level may be too easy for your child.  As the weeks and comprehension skills progress we will increase the level of reading to suit each child as best we can.

Thank you for the continued support and help at home!

Reading Time

This is how this group of students read today, for 15 minutes!  They obviously chose a spot that worked for them ~ comfortable and not distracted.

Solids and Liquids

As we study solids and liquids in Science we look at how a liquid takes the shape of the container it is in.  We decided to fill balloons with water, turn them into solids by freezing them and seeing what shapes we created.

With the colder temperatures we had a freezer right outside our door and we let our shapes freeze solid over the weekend.  This morning we unwrapped them and here is what we found...

Home Reading Changes

We have decided to try something a little different for Home Reading in the new year.  Today your child brought home library books (this will stay the same) and a Reading Journal.  This journal will allow them to write down the date, title of the book/magazine/article that they read, and an adult signature.

Students can read their library books, books from home, or a combination of each.  They can also document the pages read, for example 30 pages of a chapter book that are read in one day.  We feel that this allows for a little bit more flexibility for you at home and a chance to create a HUGE list of the books your child has read.

**Please keep the journal with the library books and return them ALL each Wednesday for a book exchange and journal check-in.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know at  elder.christa@prairiesouth.ca

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.
