Ways to Read a Book

This week was exciting as we started working on our reading skills! We looked at 2 ways to read a book ~ using the pictures OR using the words.

I used the French edition of this Robert Munsch book to demonstrate that even teachers can't read the words sometimes and have to make up the story using clues from the pictures.  For beginning readers this is a great first step as it teaches them to study the pictures, make inferences and develop ideas based on what they see.

I then showed them that we can also use the words to read a book by using the English version of the same book.  As your child begins to read words, they will often do a combination of both pictures and words and this is a natural step in their reading growth.

As you read with your child, encourage them to look at the pictures and use them as clues to the text.
